A plumber's tablet gets picked up with wet hands, put down next to a running tap and carried into cupboards no light reaches. Then it has to produce a tidy certificate and a quote. Our guide to the best rugged tablets for plumbers and heating engineers has the full reasoning. This is the short version: which one to buy.
What kills devices in plumbing and heating work
- Water, all day. Wet hands, a drip from a joint, a tablet balanced on the edge of a bath or left on a wet floor under a sink.
- Flux, jointing compound and boiler dust. It gets into the charging port and under the buttons, and it scratches glass when wiped off with a sleeve.
- Airing cupboards, lofts and cylinder tops. Warm, cramped and dark. Anything balanced on a cylinder or a joist ends up on the floor.
- Tiled floors. Kitchens and bathrooms have no soft landings. A drop from a worktop onto tiles finishes most consumer screens.
- Van life. Summer sun on the dashboard, a cold start in January, the passenger seat between jobs.
What actually matters in a spec
Sealing rated for immersion. IP67 and IP68 are dust tight and rated for immersion, so a drop into a bath is within the rating. IP65 is not. Our IP68 vs IP67 guide explains what each number tests. None of our devices is rated IP69K, so wipe them clean and never jet wash them.
A camera with a flash. Data plates, flues, a joint before and after, the leak you want the customer to see, most of it in the dark. The A6, A8 and A10 each list a 13MP rear camera with a flash. The W8 lists an 8MP rear camera and no flash.
A battery for a day of callouts. A removable battery means a charged spare takes over on the last job. The A6 and A8 both have one.
Your software decides the operating system. Job management apps mostly run on Android or in a browser; our works-with pages compare what each vendor publishes as minimum requirements with the listed specs of each device. Boiler manufacturer and flue gas analyser apps are usually written for phones, so check the minimum Android version. Manufacturer diagnostic tools that connect through an interface lead are sometimes Windows only, and one of those settles it. Digital certificate software exists for this trade too; check with the provider that it runs on the device you are buying. Our Android or Windows guide has a five minute test.
A screen readable at the outside unit. At a heat pump or on a roof, brightness matters. The A8 is rated at 1000 nits.
What we would pick
For most plumbers and heating engineers, the Tuga A8 at £379. The 8 inch screen is big enough for a commissioning form, a system drawing or a quote with pictures, and small enough for a van door pocket. It is sealed to IP67, the 1000 nit screen stays readable outside, the 8000mAh battery is removable, and the 13MP autofocus rear camera has a flash for the airing cupboard. Dual SIM 4G helps where one network is weak, NFC is built in, and VESA mount points and pogo pin contacts lock it into the Vehicle Mounting Dock. The caveats: it lists no drop or MIL-STD rating, no weight and no operating temperature, and it runs Android 12, the oldest Android in our range, so check your boiler app and certificate software support it.
If you would rather have it in a pocket than in the van, the Tuga A6 at £349 is cheaper and a sensible choice. It is a 6 inch Android 15 handheld at 277g, sealed to IP67 and rated for 1.5 metre drops, with 4G, NFC, a removable 5050mAh battery and a 13MP rear camera with a flash. It is rated for -20°C to 50°C, which covers a frosty morning. The built-in 2D barcode scanner is useful if you log van stock or parts. The trade off is the screen: a long certificate or a quote with options is cramped on 6 inches, and it has 4GB of RAM against the A8's 6GB. It is £30 cheaper.
If a manufacturer's diagnostic or service program only runs on a Windows PC, the Tuga W8 at £629 is the one to look at. It runs Windows 11 Pro on an Intel Celeron N5100 with 8GB of RAM and a 128GB SSD, and it has USB-C, USB-A and HDMI, so an interface lead plugs straight in. It is sealed to IP67, tested to MIL-STD-810G, has a 700 nit screen, a fingerprint sensor and a 5000mAh battery with fast charge, weighs 750g and is rated for -10°C to 50°C. Confirm with the manufacturer that the software runs on Windows 11, that the interface has a current driver and which connector it needs. The W8 is £250 more than the A8, its battery is smaller and not listed as removable, and its camera lists no flash. If the Windows program could run on the office PC after the job, buy Android and keep the difference. A version with a 2D barcode scanner is £699.
Accessories worth adding
For the A8, the Vehicle Mounting Dock (£109) locks it to the dashboard and charges it on the road; a 12V DC Car Charger (£26) does the charging part for less. A Capacitive Stylus (£14.99) makes signatures legible, a Tempered Glass Screen Protector 2-pack (£14) takes the grit, and a Hand Strap (£24) is worth adding because one is not in the A8's box. For the A6, a Belt Holster (£22) and a Car Phone Mount (£17). For a W8 that comes back to base, the Charging Dock (£49.99). See mounting a tablet in a van and the accessories page.
Questions plumbers and heating engineers ask
Will my boiler app and certificate software run on it?
If the app is available for Android and supports the version on the device, it should: Android 12 on the A8, Android 15 on the A6. Check the minimum version the app asks for and try it before you rely on it. If a program is Windows only, you need the W8. Check with the provider, or ask us if you are unsure.
Can I use it with wet hands?
The sealing covers the water. Neither the A6 nor the A8 lists a wet touch or glove mode, so expect to wipe the screen when water is sitting on it, and dry the device before you plug it in to charge.
I run a small firm. Is there a discount?
Yes, automatically: 3% at 2 devices, 5% at 3 to 4, 8% at 5 to 9, 10% at 10 or more. Mix any models. See bulk pricing, or get in touch for a quote or a proforma invoice.
What happens if one breaks?
There is a 12-month warranty and UK email support on every device, 30-day returns and free UK delivery in 7 to 10 working days. For longer cover, the 3-Year Warranty is £65 to £89 per device, and business fleets of five or more devices on any model can ask for a Total Care quote, with a pre-imaged swap unit dispatched the same working day for claims accepted by 14:00.
