Best Rugged Tablets for Plumbers and Heating Engineers

For most plumbers and heating engineers, the Tuga A6 at £299 is the one to start with. It is a 6.78 inch Android handheld that goes in a pocket, carries IP68 and IP69K ratings, and has a 64MP night vision camera for the dark spaces this trade works in. If a boiler manufacturer's service software only runs on a Windows PC, the Tuga W8 at £629 is the Windows option to look at. If you want a proper tablet screen for quotes, forms and drawings in the van, the Tuga A8 at £379 sits between the two.

What Plumbing and Heating Work Does to a Device

This trade is hard on electronics in ordinary ways. Your hands are wet for much of the day. The device goes down on a tiled floor, a worktop beside a running tap, or the bottom of a bath you are fitting. It picks up flux, jointing compound and boiler dust, and lives under sinks, in airing cupboards and lofts, and on a van dashboard in January.

A consumer phone in a case can handle the paperwork: commissioning checklists, service records, landlord certificates, photos, a quote at the kitchen table and a signature before you go. It is the water, the drops and the dark cupboards that finish it off. So the shortlist comes down to sealing, a camera that works in poor light, a battery that lasts a day of callouts, and an operating system that runs your software. Start with the software.

Three Questions Before You Look at Specs

1. Does Any of Your Software Need Windows?

Boiler manufacturers can offer two kinds of software. The first is a phone app for commissioning, fault codes and service reminders, which may talk to the boiler over Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. Apps like that are often written for phones. Check with the manufacturer that the app supports Android 14, then try it on the device before you rely on it.

The second kind is diagnostic or service software that installs on a Windows PC and connects to the boiler through an interface lead. If your work involves that, you need a Windows device. Check with the manufacturer which platforms the software supports, whether it needs a specific interface, and whether it runs on Windows 11. Do not take a retailer's word for it, including ours.

If your flue gas analyser has a companion app for logging readings and producing the customer's report, check the analyser manufacturer's list of supported devices and Android versions. If you print to a separate printer, check that pairs too.

Our Android or Windows guide has a five minute test for this. One Windows only program you cannot do without means Windows. Everything else means Android, which is cheaper, lighter and has bigger batteries.

2. How Wet Does It Get?

IP67 and IP68 are dust tight and rated for immersion, a metre for 30 minutes on IP67 and deeper on IP68. IP65 is dust tight and protected against water jets, but not immersion. Our IP68 vs IP67 guide explains the ratings in full. For this trade: IP67 and IP68 are rated for immersion, so a drop into a bath is within the rating. IP65 is not rated for immersion.

One more rating matters here. IP69K covers high pressure, high temperature water jets, which is what lets a device survive jet washing. In our range, only the A6 carries it.

3. Handheld or Tablet?

Then decide between a handheld and a tablet. A handheld lives in a pocket or holster and comes out many times a day for a photo or a fault code. A tablet lives in the van and comes into the house for a quote or a long form. Some firms run both.

Tuga A6: The One for the Toolbag

The Tuga A6 is the pocket option, and at £299 it is the lowest priced device in our range.

  • 6.78 inch FHD+ 120Hz screen, 560 nits
  • IP68 and IP69K, MIL-STD-810H
  • 64MP night vision camera plus 50MP main camera
  • 10600mAh battery with 33W fast charging
  • 5G, Wi-Fi 5, Bluetooth 5.2, NFC
  • Android 14, 12GB RAM, 256GB storage, microSD up to 2TB
  • Glove mode, fingerprint sensor and face unlock
  • 441g, rated for -20°C to 60°C
  • £299

The camera is the reason to pick it over the A8 for this trade. A 64MP camera built for low light is what you want under a sink, behind a boiler casing, in a cylinder cupboard or across a loft, where a torch would need the hand that is holding the device. Before and after shots, data plates, the state of a flue, the leak you want the customer to see. On 5G, photos can upload to your job sheet software before you are back in the van, signal permitting.

IP69K means it survives jet washing at the end of a dirty job. The A6 lists both a fingerprint sensor and face unlock, and has a glove mode. The 10600mAh battery is the largest in our range. The Belt Holster (£22), Car Phone Mount (£17) and 12V DC Car Charger (£26) fit it.

Where it falls short: it is a phone sized screen. A long commissioning form, or a quote with options at the kitchen table, is cramped on 6.78 inches.

Tuga A8: The Van Tablet

The Tuga A8 is an 8 inch Android tablet built to live in the van and come into the house for the paperwork.

  • 8 inch sunlight readable screen, 800 nits
  • IP68, MIL-STD-810H
  • 10000mAh battery with 18W fast charging
  • 4G LTE, Wi-Fi 5, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC
  • 13MP rear camera plus 5MP front
  • Android 14, 8GB RAM, 128GB storage, microSD up to 512GB
  • Glove mode, vehicle mountable, USB-C and USB-A
  • 680g, rated for -20°C to 60°C
  • £379

Eight inches is enough for a form with a lot of fields, a system drawing or a quote with pictures, and it still fits a van door pocket. The 800 nit screen is readable in bright light, which matters on a roof or at an external boiler or heat pump unit. The Vehicle Mounting Dock (£109) bolts to a dashboard or windscreen and keeps the A8 secure and powered on the road. The same manufacturer check on apps applies as for the A6.

Where it differs from the A6: a standard 13MP camera without the night vision feature, no IP69K rating, so no hosing it down, and 4G rather than 5G. It costs £80 more, and it is the better choice when the screen does more work than the camera.

Tuga W8: When the Software Only Runs on a PC

The Tuga W8 is an 8 inch Windows 11 Pro tablet. It exists in this trade for one reason: the boiler or controls software you need is a Windows program.

  • Windows 11 Pro on an Intel Celeron N5100, 8GB RAM, 128GB SSD
  • 8 inch IPS screen, 700 nits, sunlight readable
  • IP67, MIL-STD-810G
  • 5000mAh battery with fast charge
  • 4G LTE, Wi-Fi 5, Bluetooth 4.2, NFC, GPS and GLONASS
  • USB-C, USB-A and HDMI, pogo pin dock connector
  • Fingerprint sensor, 8MP rear camera plus 5MP front
  • 750g, rated for -10°C to 50°C
  • £629

It runs Windows 11 Pro and has USB-C, USB-A and HDMI ports. Whether your manufacturer's software installs and runs on it, and which connector its interface lead needs, is for the manufacturer to confirm before you buy. Also confirm that the software runs on Windows 11, that the interface has a current driver, and that it is usable with a touchscreen rather than a mouse.

IP67 covers a drop into standing water, but there is no IP69K, so do not hose it down or pressure wash it. The 5000mAh battery is about half the capacity of the A6 or A8, so plan on the 12V DC Car Charger (£26) between jobs or the Charging Dock (£49.99) at base. It is rated for -10°C to 50°C against -20°C to 60°C for the Android pair, and rated to the older MIL-STD-810G revision rather than 810H.

The W8 is £330 more than the A6 and £250 more than the A8. If the only Windows program in your week could run on the office PC after the job, buy Android and keep the difference. If it is needed on site every week and the manufacturer confirms it runs on Windows 11, the W8 earns its keep.

What About the W10 and WH6?

The Tuga W10 (£649) adds a 10.1 inch screen, an Intel N100, a wired Ethernet port and a removable battery, but it is rated IP65 and weighs 1197g, so it suits commercial heating and controls work rather than domestic wet work. The Tuga WH6 (£699) is Windows 11 in a 6.5 inch handheld, also IP65. Neither is rated for immersion.

Winter Callouts

The A6 and A8 are rated to operate down to -20°C, the W8 to -10°C. Do not put a frozen device straight onto a charger, and let it warm up and dry off before you plug it in. Our winter battery guide explains why.

Buying as a Small Firm

Every device includes a 12 month warranty against defects in materials and workmanship. The paid 3-Year Warranty is offered on every model: £65 on the A6, A8 and A10, £79 on the W8 and W10, and £89 on the WH6. Delivery is free to UK addresses and takes 7 to 10 working days. Prices are what you pay. No VAT to add.

If you are equipping more than one engineer, our bulk orders page covers volume pricing, and any UK registered business, sole traders included, can apply for a trade account. For a quote or a proforma invoice, contact us with the models and quantities.

Which One to Buy

  • Domestic plumbing and heating, apps and web based paperwork: Tuga A6, £299.
  • The same, but you quote and fill in long forms all day: Tuga A8, £379.
  • A Windows only diagnostic or service program you use on site: Tuga W8, £629.
  • Commercial plant and controls, plugging into panels: Tuga W10, £649, if you can keep it out of standing water.

Whatever you choose, do the software check first. List the boiler apps, the analyser app and the job management system you use, confirm with each maker that it runs on the device, then compare hardware. A device that cannot run your analyser app is no use at any price.
