Technicians use the Papertrail mobile app in the field: they scan an NFC tag, RFID label, barcode or QR code on a harness, hoist or breathing apparatus set, complete a digital checklist, and the record syncs to the cloud when the device is back in signal. That work happens on turbine platforms, in plant rooms, at height and in the rain, so the device needs to cope with knocks, dust and water and run for a full shift.

This page sets out what Papertrail publishes about device requirements, which Tuga rugged devices meet them, and how to get the app running. We found no published list of recommended devices or screen sizes from Papertrail, so the device choices below are Tuga Hardware's own reasoning from the published requirements, not vendor guidance.

Requirements

What Papertrail.io needs from a device

Each item below comes from Kit Log Limited, trading as Papertrail's own listing or documentation, with the source linked.

  • Android or iOS for the mobile app

The Papertrail mobile app is published for Android (Google Play, package com.papertrail.app, developer shown as Papertrail.io) and iOS. The vendor states it supports the current major release and two previous releases of both iOS and Android, that the app will usually work on older versions but not all features are routinely tested, and that users may see some performance issues on older devices. The Google Play web listing does not display a numeric minimum Android version (checked 12 October 2026). Source: help.papertrail.io

  • Web app for Windows via a browser

There is no native Windows app; the help centre lists only iOS and Android for the mobile app. The web app at app.papertrail.io can be used in Chrome, Firefox, Edge or Safari, works best in the current and two previous versions of those browsers, and needs cookies and JavaScript enabled. The browser article says nothing about offline use; offline working is described for the mobile app only. Source: help.papertrail.io

  • Offline working with automatic sync (mobile app)

Inspections recorded with no 3G, 4G or Wi-Fi appear under Pending Updates on the mobile dashboard and sync automatically once the device comes into signal. The Google Play listing states that teams can work without a mobile signal and the app synchronises when back online. A separate help article on Universal Search (article 14622004) adds that searching a single synced account works offline, while searching across all or multiple accounts needs an active internet connection. • Built-in NFC for tag scanning

Papertrail says the easiest way to scan NFC tags is with the inbuilt NFC functionality on a mobile smartphone, and that a separate NFC scanner can also be used if required (it links to the Saveo reader in the Papertrail Shop). Compatible tags use NDEF, NFCA or IsoDep technology (NTAG213, NTAG215, NTAG216) or ICode Slix. Source: help.papertrail.io

  • Camera for barcode scanning (and QR codes)

In the mobile app, you hold the device camera over the barcode so it sits within the rectangular outline on screen. Papertrail advises keeping the camera lens clean and free of smudges and having enough background light for the camera to focus. The Google Play listing says the app can be used with existing QR codes or barcodes, and the scanning feature page says to scan a code with your phone's camera. Source: help.papertrail.io

  • Optional external readers (web app and Bluetooth)

Papertrail says barcode scanners from Barcode Warehouse can be used with its web application, and that the Papertrail applications work with any type of Bluetooth RFID reader that acts as a keyboard wedge. RFID works on LF, HF and UHF frequencies, and labels and readers must use the same frequency. Source: help.papertrail.io

  • Mobile data or Wi-Fi for sync

The mobile app will always sync as long as it has a good 3G or 4G cellular or wireless internet connection, and a sync can be forced by holding just below the account name on the dashboard and swiping down. Source: help.papertrail.io

  • Login to an active subscription

The Google Play listing states that the Papertrail app is free to download and requires a login to access your subscription. The pricing page lists plans per user in GBP, with the Starter plan from one user and scanning of NFC, RFID, QR and barcodes included, and no credit card required for the free trial. Devices

Which Tuga device fits Papertrail.io

Picked on the published requirements above and nothing else.

Our pick

Tuga A10 £449

The Tuga A10 is the primary pick for the Papertrail Android app. It runs Android 14, has built-in NFC for reading the NTAG and ICode Slix tags Papertrail lists as compatible, and a 13MP rear camera with flash for the camera-based barcode and QR scanning the app uses. The 10.1 inch 1920 x 1200 screen gives room for checklist work and certificate review, the IP68 and MIL-STD-810H rating suits plant rooms, wind farms and outdoor sites, and 4G dual SIM lets pending inspections sync as soon as the technician is back in signal. One note on the operating system: Papertrail supports the current major Android release and two previous releases. Android 17 was released in 2026, so at the time of writing Android 14 sits outside that window. Papertrail's published position for older versions is that the app usually works but not every feature is routinely tested, and that older devices may see some performance issues. If that matters for your fleet, trial one unit first.

  • Android mobile app: the A10 runs Android 14. Papertrail supports the current release and two previous, and says the app usually works on older versions but does not routinely test all features.
  • NFC tag scanning with inbuilt NFC: the A10 has NFC built in.
  • Camera barcode and QR scanning: 13MP rear camera with flash (scanning is handled by the app; the A10 has no dedicated scan engine).
  • Sync over mobile data when back in signal: 4G dual SIM plus dual-band Wi-Fi 5.
  • Field conditions: IP68, MIL-STD-810H, 8000mAh battery, operating temperature -20 to 60C, tempered glass screen.
Alternative

Tuga A6 £299

The Tuga A6 is the alternative for rope access technicians, arborists and inspectors who want a pocketable handheld rather than a tablet. It also runs Android 14 (the same operating system note as the A10 applies), has built-in NFC, and a 50MP main camera for the app's camera-based barcode and QR scanning. Its IP68 plus IP69K rating and glove mode suit wet, dirty work at height, it has 5G for sync where coverage exists, and at 441g it hangs from a belt holster without getting in the way. The trade-off is the 6.78 inch screen, which is fine for scanning and ticking checklists but smaller for reviewing reports.

  • Android mobile app: runs Android 14, the same operating system note as the A10 applies.
  • NFC tag scanning: NFC built in.
  • Camera barcode and QR scanning: 50MP main camera plus 64MP night-vision camera (scanning is handled by the app).
  • Sync in the field: 5G, Wi-Fi 5 and a 10600mAh battery with 33W fast charge.
  • Handheld use at height and in the wet: IP68 + IP69K, MIL-STD-810H, Gorilla Glass 5, glove mode, 441g.
Alternative

Tuga W10 £649

The Tuga W10 is only the right choice where your site standardises on Windows. Papertrail has no Windows app, so the W10 runs the web app at app.papertrail.io in Edge or Chrome, which is also the only place Papertrail says folders can be moved. The web app has no published offline mode, so the W10 suits office, workshop and depot use with Wi-Fi or its RJ45 Ethernet port rather than offline work on a turbine. For scanning, Papertrail documents barcode scanners and Bluetooth RFID readers that act as a keyboard wedge for the web app. The W10 can be specified with an optional 2D barcode scanner or optional UHF RFID reader; ask us before ordering how these present their input, and note that Papertrail says RFID labels and readers must share the same frequency, so a UHF reader would not read HF NFC tags.

  • Web app in a supported browser: Windows 11 Pro runs current Edge and Chrome.
  • Scanner input to the web app: optional 2D barcode scanner and optional UHF RFID reader can be specified. Papertrail documents barcode scanners and keyboard-wedge Bluetooth RFID readers for the web app; confirm with Tuga Hardware how the optional modules present input before ordering.
  • Wired connectivity in depots and workshops: 100Mbps RJ45 Ethernet, HDMI, USB-A and USB-C, dual-band Wi-Fi 5, Bluetooth 5.2.
  • Dust and water jets: IP65 (not rated for immersion), with a removable 5000mAh battery.
Setting up

Getting Papertrail.io running

  1. Use your existing Papertrail account, or start a free trial on papertrail.io (Papertrail states no credit card is required).
  2. On the Tuga A10 or A6, open Google Play, search for Papertrail.io (developer Papertrail.io, package com.papertrail.app) and install it. On the Tuga W10, open Edge, or install Chrome, and go to app.papertrail.io.
  3. Sign in with your Papertrail login. The app is free to download and needs a login to reach your subscription.
  4. Make sure NFC is switched on in Android settings, then tap the Search icon in the app and the NFC button to open the scanning pop-up and scan a tag. Camera barcode and QR scanning uses the rear camera, so keep the lens clean and make sure there is enough light.
  5. If you use a Bluetooth reader such as the DMM iD 1.0 (which Papertrail says is seen as a keyboard by any Bluetooth device) or the Saveo C300 sold in the Papertrail Shop, pair it in Bluetooth settings.
  6. Fit the hand strap, and add the charging dock or vehicle mounting dock so devices are charged between shifts. Pending Updates sync automatically once the device has a Wi-Fi or mobile data connection.

Questions

Papertrail.io on a Tuga device

The Papertrail.io app is on Google Play and the A10 runs Android 14. The Play listing does not show a numeric minimum version. Papertrail supports the current major Android release and two previous releases, and Android 17 was released in 2026, so Android 14 is outside that window at the time of writing. Papertrail states the app usually works on older versions although not all features are routinely tested. The A10 has the built-in NFC and rear camera the app uses for tag and barcode scanning. Tuga devices are not tested or approved by Papertrail; we sell the hardware and you can trial one unit first.

The mobile app does. Papertrail states that inspections recorded without 3G, 4G or Wi-Fi sit under Pending Updates and sync automatically once the device comes into signal, and that a single synced account can be searched offline. This applies to the Android and iOS app, so to the A10 and A6. Nothing is published about offline use of the web app, which is what the Windows W10 would run.

Both run Android 14 and have NFC and a camera. The A10 has a 10.1 inch 1920 x 1200 screen, 8000mAh battery, 4G and weighs 680g, which suits checklist-heavy inspections and reviewing certificates on site. The A6 has a 6.78 inch screen, 10600mAh battery, 5G, a 50MP main camera, IP69K on top of IP68, and weighs 441g, so it suits technicians scanning tags at height or on the move who want something that fits a belt holster.
