What we'd buy

Tuga A8

The all-rounder. Fits the van door pocket.

8″ / IP68 / 10000mAh / 680g

£379 Full spec

Field service work is driving, diagnosing and documenting. The job comes in on the tablet, the manual is on it, and the customer signs on it before you leave.

What kills devices in field service

  • Plant rooms and boiler cupboards. Heat, oil, grease and the occasional leak. A device put down on top of a unit or on a wet floor gets whatever is there.
  • Van life. Hours on a dashboard in summer sun, a cold start on a winter morning, and being thrown on the passenger seat between jobs.
  • Flat batteries at the wrong moment. The last job of the day is when the customer wants to sign and the tablet is on 3%.
  • Drops. Off a ladder, off a roof hatch, out of the van door. The usual.
  • Weak signal. Basements, rural sites and steel-framed buildings all make uploading a job report harder than it should be.

What actually matters in a spec

A screen you can read in the van and in the sun. Brightness matters more than resolution here. The A8 runs at 800 nits, which is comfortably readable outdoors.

Battery and in-vehicle charging. A big battery plus a way to charge on the move means the device is full at every job.

Sealing and drop testing. IP68 and MIL-STD-810H cover the dust, water and drops that come with the job. Our IP68 vs IP67 guide explains the difference between the two sealing grades.

Your software decides the operating system. Most job management apps run on Android or in a browser. Some diagnostic and commissioning tools are Windows only, and if yours is, that settles it. Otherwise Android costs noticeably less for the same job.

We go into this in more depth in the best tablets for field engineers.

What we would pick

For most field service engineers, the Tuga A8 at £379. It is sealed to IP68 and drop tested to MIL-STD-810H, has an 800 nit sunlight readable screen, glove mode and a 10000mAh battery. 4G LTE is built in, it is vehicle mountable, and it has both USB-C and USB-A. It works as a dashboard unit on the road and a job tablet on site.

If you do not need a tablet-sized screen, the Tuga A6 at £299 is cheaper and goes in a pocket. It is sealed to IP68 and IP69K, has 5G, NFC and a 10600mAh battery, and the 64MP night vision camera is handy for dark ceiling voids and the back of plant. For engineers whose job sheets are short and whose main tasks are photos and sign-off, it is often all you need.

If your diagnostic or commissioning software only runs on Windows, the Tuga W8 at £629 is the one we would look at. It runs full Windows 11 Pro on an Intel Celeron N5100 with 8GB of RAM, has USB-C, USB-A and HDMI so you can plug into equipment directly, and a 700 nit screen. It is sealed to IP67 and tested to MIL-STD-810G. A version with a 2D barcode scanner is £699 if you scan parts or asset tags.

Accessories worth adding

For a van-based engineer, the Vehicle Mounting Dock (£109) is the most useful add-on: it locks the tablet in place and keeps it charged while you drive. If that is more than you need, a 12V DC Car Charger (£26) does the charging part. A Capacitive Stylus (£14.99) makes customer signatures legible, and the USB-C to USB-A OTG Adapter (£8) lets you plug in a USB drive or peripheral. For the A6, a Car Phone Mount (£17) and a Belt Holster (£22). Everything is on the accessories page.

Questions engineers ask

Can it replace my laptop?

For job sheets, manuals and reports, usually yes. For Windows-only diagnostic software, only the Windows models will do it.

Will it work as a sat nav in the van?

The A8 has GPS and GLONASS, and with the vehicle mount it sits on the dashboard and charges as you drive.
