For most landscapers and gardeners, the Tuga A8 is the one to look at: an 8 inch screen for quotes and plans, 800 nits for a lawn in July, IP68 for the rain and the mud, and a price of £379. If the device is going to be jet washed with the rest of the kit, or needs to live in a pocket rather than the van, the Tuga A6 handheld at £299 is the only device in our range rated IP69K, and it is the better buy for that job.
What the Job Does to a Tablet
Landscaping is hard on electronics in a different way to construction. There is less concrete dust and a lot more of everything wet. A normal day might include:
- Mud and grit. Soil, compost and gravel get into ports and under buttons, and wet soil carries grit into gaps and dries there.
- Rain. Hours of it, often with the tablet face up on a wheelbarrow.
- Sun. Open lawns with nothing to shade the screen from May to September.
- The pressure washer. The mowers, the trailer and the tools get jet washed at the end of the day, and it is tempting to give a muddy tablet the same treatment.
- Cold mornings. Frost, hedge cutting in January, and batteries that drop faster than they do in summer.
- Vibration and drops. Ride on mowers, trailers, van floors, and the fall from a hip pocket when you crouch to plant.
The Specs That Matter for Garden Work
IP Rating, and the Pressure Washer Question
Start here, because it is the spec that separates the two devices this guide focuses on. Our guide to IP68 vs IP67 covers the whole rating system. The short version for landscaping is:
- IP68 means dust tight and able to survive immersion. Rain, mud and a brief dunk are what the rating is for. We do not list an immersion depth or time, so do not leave a device submerged. The A8 is rated IP68.
- IP69K is a separate test for high pressure, high temperature water jets. That is the pressure washer rating. In our range only the A6 carries it, rated IP68 plus IP69K.
IP68 does not cover jet washing. A pressure washer forces water past seals that would keep out a bucket of water. If your tablet will be hosed down with the mowers, you want IP69K. If it will only ever see rain, mud and the odd dunk, IP68 covers that.
One caveat: IP tests use clean, still water, and soil water and liquid feed are not. Rinse the device in fresh water after a muddy day, whatever its rating, and let it dry before you plug in a charger.
Screen Brightness
Brightness is measured in nits. A screen that is fine indoors can wash out on an open lawn in full sun, so you want a lot more. The A8 is rated at 800 nits and listed as sunlight readable. The A6 is rated at 560 nits. For comparison, the 10.1 inch Tuga A10 is 350 nits, so it suits drawings in the van rather than a client meeting on a sunny patio.
Glove Mode and Wet Hands
Both the A6 and the A8 list glove mode. Try it with the gloves you actually wear before relying on it. No touchscreen likes water sitting on the glass, rugged or not, so expect to wipe it on your sleeve before you tap.
Battery
Many gardens and sites have no power nearby. The A6 has a 10600mAh battery with 33W fast charging. The A8 has a 10000mAh battery with 18W fast charging. Both are larger than the A10's 8000mAh, which matters most in the cold, when any lithium battery delivers less.
Our cold weather guide explains why a tablet showing 40% on a frosty morning is not necessarily a faulty battery. For topping up between jobs, the 12V DC Car Charger on our accessories page is £26 and fits every device in the range.
GPS and Mapping
Mapping is where a tablet can earn its place for a landscaper, with the right app: measuring a lawn, walking a boundary, marking where the drains run. The A6 lists GPS, GLONASS and BeiDou. The A8 lists GPS and GLONASS. Neither device lists a positioning accuracy, so treat any area or distance figure as a rough guide and use a proper survey where a boundary is in dispute.
A note on apps. Measuring, mapping, quoting and job management apps are all third party software. Both devices run Android 14, but check that the specific app you rely on runs on the device, and works at that screen size, before you commit.
The A6 has 5G and the A8 has 4G LTE; check your network's coverage map for the areas you work in.
Camera
Before and after photos sell the next job and settle the odd dispute about what the client asked for. The A6 has a 64MP night vision camera plus a 50MP main camera. The A8 has a 13MP rear camera and a 5MP front camera. For quoting and record keeping the A8's camera does the job. If photos are how you sell, the A6 lists the higher resolution cameras.
Drops and Cold
Both the A6 and the A8 are rated MIL-STD-810H and listed for operating temperatures from minus 20°C to 60°C. Our MIL-STD-810H guide explains what that rating does and does not tell you. It is not a guarantee, and a hard landing on a patio slab is still a hard landing.
Quoting on Site
One practical gain for a small landscaping firm is doing the quote on the spot: walk the site, measure it, photograph it, price it and email it before you leave. That is easier on an 8 inch screen than on a phone, and, if your quoting app supports it, the client can see a sketch or a plant list and sign on the screen. The A8 comes with a hand strap in the box, and a Capacitive Stylus for signatures is £14.99 on the accessories page. Note that the stylus is listed for the A8, the A10 and the Windows range, not the A6.
For maintenance rounds, the quote is usually a number and a sentence, and the A6 handles that from a pocket.
Our Picks for Landscaping and Garden Work
Tuga A8: For Quoting, Plans and Mapping
The Tuga A8 suits a landscaper who designs, quotes and plans on site and keeps the tablet in the van between jobs.
- 8 inch sunlight readable screen, 1280 x 800, 800 nits
- IP68
- MIL-STD-810H
- 10000mAh battery with 18W fast charging
- 4G LTE, Wi-Fi 5, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, GPS and GLONASS
- Glove mode
- 13MP rear camera, 5MP front camera
- 8GB RAM, 128GB storage, microSD up to 512GB
- 680g, Android 14
- Vehicle mountable: the Vehicle Mounting Dock is £109
- £379
Where it falls short: it is IP68, not IP69K, so keep it away from the pressure washer. And at 680g it is a tablet, not a pocket device.
Tuga A6: For the Pressure Washer and the Pocket
The Tuga A6 is a 6.78 inch handheld rather than a tablet. It suits garden maintenance, grounds teams and anyone whose kit gets jet washed, because it is the one device in the range rated for that.
- 6.78 inch FHD+ 120Hz screen, 2460 x 1080, 560 nits
- IP68 plus IP69K, rated for high pressure jet washing
- MIL-STD-810H, Gorilla Glass 5
- 10600mAh battery with 33W fast charging
- 5G, Wi-Fi 5, Bluetooth 5.2, NFC, GPS, GLONASS and BeiDou
- Glove mode, fingerprint sensor and face unlock
- 64MP night vision camera plus 50MP main camera
- 12GB RAM, 256GB storage, microSD up to 2TB
- 441g, Android 14, screen protector pre-applied
- £299
Where it falls short: the screen. At 6.78 inches it is phone sized, and showing a client a planting plan on it means pinching and zooming. A fingerprint reader may not read a muddy finger, so keep a PIN you can type with dirty hands. The Belt Holster (£22) carries it on your belt and the Car Phone Mount (£17) holds it in the vehicle, both on the accessories page.
Which One Should You Buy?
It comes down to two questions: will it be pressure washed, and do you need to show people things on it?
- Design and build landscaper, quotes with drawings, one device in the van: the A8.
- Garden maintenance, mowing rounds, grounds crews, kit gets jet washed: the A6.
- A crew: an A6 each for the crew and an A8 for whoever quotes. The A8 is £80 more than the A6.
- Detailed garden design drawings: the A10 at £449 has the Full HD 10.1 inch screen for that, but at 350 nits it belongs in the van or the office rather than out on the lawn.
When Something Else Is the Better Buy
If all you do is take photos, send a few messages and raise invoices from the van, a decent phone in a good case may be all you need, and you probably already own one. A rugged device makes sense when the phone is the thing that keeps breaking, or when you want a screen big enough to quote from.
If your garden design software only runs on a Windows PC, neither of these Android devices will run it. Our guide to Android or Windows rugged tablets walks through that decision. Our Windows 11 models are rated IP65 to IP67, with no IP69K, so a Windows tablet and a pressure washer should keep their distance.
